CWG winners education to be sponsored by Government

Recently, the government has proposed for providing free education for Commonwealth Games medal winners. The entire duration of their studies will be sponsored by the government, according to the plan. The expenditure on education for school going students and college going students would be borne by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the University Grants Commission (UGC), respectively. The information was given by the Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Smt D Purandeswari, in the Rajya Sabha. Already, a committee has been constituted by UGC to frame guidelines and modalities to implement the scheme 'Free Education for Commonwealth Games Medal Winners' so that the maximum number of sportspersons who won medals in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games, 2010 are benefited. CBSE is also offering Chacha Nehru Sports awards of `6000/- per student for outstanding sportspersons and for athletes who set new records in 15 different disciplines during the annual National CBSE sports and games competitions.
