In a promising development for fresh graduates entering the job market, a recent study by TeamLease Edtech reveals that 72% of Indian employers are planning to hire freshers in the second half of 2024. The study, titled ‘Career Outlook Report HY2 (July – December 2024),’ surveyed 603 companies across India, highlighting a positive hiring trend as the country’s economy continues to stabilise.

This 72% hiring intent marks a 4% increase from the first half of the year and a 7% rise compared to the corresponding period in 2023, signalling growing confidence among employers. The report identifies e-commerce and technology start-ups (61%), engineering and infrastructure (59%), and retail (54%) as the top three industries with the highest intent to hire fresh talent.

Geographically, Bengaluru leads the pack with a 74% intent to hire freshers, followed by Mumbai at 60% and Chennai at 54%, making these cities hotspots for emerging professionals. Shantanu Rooj, founder and CEO of TeamLease Edtech, commented on the findings, stating, “The increase in hiring intent for freshers is an encouraging sign. It reflects growing confidence among employers and presents valuable opportunities for fresh talent entering the workforce.”

The report also highlights the most sought-after job roles, with full-stack developers, SEO executives, digital sales associates, and UI/UX designers topping the list. Employers are particularly keen on candidates possessing skills in cybersecurity, cloud computing, data analytics, and search engine optimisation, underscoring the evolving demands of the job market.

Furthermore, the study sheds light on the importance of industry-academia collaboration, with 70% of respondents advocating for curriculum enhancements that include experiential learning. Another 62% emphasised the need for stronger partnerships between academic institutions and industries to align training with real-world requirements better.

In terms of apprenticeships, the manufacturing sector leads the charge, with 25% of employers planning to hire degree apprentices, followed by the engineering and infrastructure sectors at 19% and construction and real estate at 11%. Bengaluru once again takes the lead in apprenticeship hiring intent at 25%, followed by Chennai at 21% and Mumbai at 16%.

Rooj further emphasised the significance of these findings, stating, “The real game-changer is the growing recognition of the need for stronger industry-academia partnerships. The steady demand for degree apprenticeships further underscores this shift towards practical, hands-on learning. It’s an exciting time for both freshers and employers as we bridge the gap between education and industry requirements.”

As the second half of 2024 unfolds, the positive hiring outlook bodes well for fresh graduates, offering a wealth of opportunities across various industries and regions in India.
